Why would anyone have expected anything better? The English chose to dream, and dreams rarely survive the cold light of morning.
The logic of Brexit is simple: British services for German cars and French cheeses, sweetened by oodles and oodles of lovely British (or more accurately English) dosh, putting off the evil day when farm prices in France achieve their natural equilibrium. The Irish border is irrelevant. There is only a border if we build one which no one wants to do.
The problem is simple: who should do the chasing? Now I am a simple chap. In my world of bank managers and overdrafts, I have always assumed that the chasing is done by whoever wants the cash; which is why supplicants dress smartly and private equity dresses in jeans.
Which raises the question of why is it going so badly? And all I can think of is that is that in Mrs May Britain has maxed out. She probably does not want to leave but feels compelled to do the decent thing. Hence, she instinctively is chasing a deal to have it both ways, playing straight into the hands of les francais pas sympathetique. And who can blame her when the European goody bag has been so generous to so many? Disastrous does not begin to describe it.
How the to restore balance to the universe? The obvious route is to flounce out, cry World Trade Association rules, no payments and let loose the dogs of war. Or if not the dogs at least some pretty mean looking puppies. If that does not get the result on our terms desired by the Remainers then I am a banana. However, sadly for Mrs May in this role she is not credible. And for that reason if for no other she must go.
