Thoughts from afar

In England 53.38% voted to leave against 46.62% who voted to stay. Nothing ambiguous at all as far as I can see. The real question is why do the English put up with a constitutional mess that is the U.K. given they pay for everything? As for Brexit, if you’ve ever spoken to people on the shop floor in the north of England you would understand they are not stupid and voted in the clear understanding that out is in their best interest. It’s immigration, pure and simple. It hits the low paid disproportionately: firstly by driving down wage rates, and secondly, by reducing the value of social goods such as schools housing and medicine, as rationing becomes more acute and sense of community fails: which, of course, if you are low paid represents a large part of your standard of living. The problem with the southern middle class remainers is that they did very well from the EC and were happy to ignore the plight of the English working class in the old industrial heartlands. How much easier to simply call them racists and bigots.

Sadly democracy means that you actually respect the results of the democratic process. We have now had a an Act of Parliament which promised to respect the results of the Referendum, the Referendum itself and a general election where both Labour and the Conservatives promised to respect the result. I am struggling to understand how in these circumstances their can be a new referendum without throwing into doubt British democracy itself.

What is frustrating is the flatulent whiff of liberal hypocracy we have to put up with; these self-elected guardians of our consciences who are unable to respect the democratic views of those they socially look down on. It’s not as if the EC has out performed the rest of the world over the last 30 years. What is their to be proud of? Greece? The de industrialisation of a nation? Untrammelled migration? The greatest migrations since WW2, which are driving the resurgence of extremist politics in every European country. The Euro? A sandcastle waiting for a slightly higher tide. European democracy? When the democratic process across the continent has been reduced to a 21st century version of the Holy Roman Empire with German chancellors playing the role of the Hapsburgs supported by the Commission in the guise of a New Papacy.

It is as if these liberals militant, having stopped believing in God, have transferred their faith to the EC. At least the Catholic Church offered up interesting popes. I’ll take a Borgia or a Medici over a Junker or a Selmayr any day. And as for being an heretic? Well that’s a risk I am more than happy to take.
